Growing up in India, this spice has been recommended an ample number of times by parents and grandparents to fix many of our health pains, be it an upset tummy, joint pain, nausea, cold, and flu. There has been a strong faith in the countless benefits of ginger. Ginger is a perennial herb local to China and India, known as Zingiber officinale. Most of the food preparations in India include ginger as a main ingredient.
Today I will highlight the health benefits alongside my personal stories.
Cold, cough and flu treatment
For years, we have siped ginger tea due to its taste and the health aspect of ginger. In Ayurveda, this is one of the most natural remedies for cold and flu.
“combining grated ginger (1 tablespoon), cardamom(1 teaspoon) and Mint leaves (4-5 leaves) and Green Tea or Black tea leaves(1/2 cup). Steep the tea and strain it and add honey, I prefer Manuka Honey because of its added health benefits. You can read more about my recipe with Manuka Honey. This tea with sugar alternative will help reduce symptoms of cold and flu.
I have used this number of times to treat myself at the onset of cough and cold or sore throat.
Fights Inflammation
Ginger has volatile oils with anti-inflammatory properties comparable to those of NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), which makes it an exceptional remedy for flu, headaches, and menstrual pains.
It reduces medication intake in osteoarthritis.”
Promotes healthy Digestion
Ginger is advantageous for digestive concerns like bloating and constipation. It provides a relaxed and calming effect in the stomach. Most of the recipes in India traditionally had some form of ginger in food preparation. It can be used in different types, grated, paste, and garlic, another great herb.
Prevents Nausea
I have used this remedy during both my pregnancies. I had severe morning sickness, which caused nausea and vomiting sensations every morning for 3-4 months. One teaspoon of grated ginger and a teaspoon of lemon juice was my saving grace.
The other widely known benefits of ginger are
Helps relieve menstrual cramps
helps lower cholesterol
Dental health
lower blood sugar
My tip, A teaspoon of ginger a day, keeps a doctor away!
