Can drinking “Burning Hot Tea” cause cancer

My husband and I are tea lovers, and we can have tea at any time. We both enjoy having worldly chats on a cup of tea, specifically Darjeeling Tea.However, my concern has always remained the heat at which we both enjoy our tea. We always new the health benefits of tea, but it never ocurred to see the other side of the picture too. Read more on different tea and its associated health benefits.

Moving to what was my real concer, I enjoy lukewarm tea, whereas my husband enjoys really “hot tea.” I have perpetually been anxious about the consequences of this as “burning hot” can harm body parts, why not throat. I started doing my research out of concern for my hubby, and I found tons of studies.

I have tried to share a few with my readers wondering about the identical issue. Let’s study the articles,

The first study I found was an article in the UK publication, “Independent News.”According to the report, Drinking boiling tea could almost double the risk of oesophageal cancer, according to a study of 50,000 people. Cancer experts found that drinking 700ml per day of tea at 60C or higher was “consistently associated” with a 90 percent higher risk of the disease than people who drank liquids at lower temperatures. The study’s lead author, Dr Farhad Islami, advised tea drinkers to let their beverages cool down before drinking them to reduce the cancer risk.

My second article was from CNN, which cited that “Stephen Evans, a professor of pharmacoepidemiology at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, said that it was the heat that was the issue rather than the type of beverage.”

“In fact, it is probably anything hot: Microwaved jam has been known to cause esophageal injury. It is possible that the trauma leads to cell changes and hence to cancer,” he told the Science Media Centre.

Now I needed a trustworthy study done on the above claims, and I had to dig the source from where the above citings were being made. I turned towards “https://www.nhs.uk/news/,” where it has referred to the study that was done and the findings. As per the publication, The study was carried out by a team of researchers from the Tehran University of Medical Sciences in Iran, the International Agency for Research on Cancer in France, the American Cancer Society, the National Cancer Institute in the US, the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in the US, and the University of Cambridge in the UK.

As a worried wife, I needed a conclusion, and once again, I drew my reasoning from Various publications.

The conclusions appeared to imply a definite link between drinking burning hot tea every day and heightened risk of squamous cell oesophageal cancer.

However, there was a breathing moment when few studies suggested that cancer is sporadic. The high-risk population studied demonstrated only 0.6% of the population studied developed oesophageal cancer.

The risks of getting cancer from drinking burning hot tea could still be lower than more identified risk factors, such as alcohol, smoking, diet and obesity.

The researchers have tried to hold these and other lifestyle factors linked with hot tea drinking to conclude.

For me, it’s still not very clear if drinking “burning hot tea” can singlehandedly cause “oesophageal cancer,” but if possible, it can surely be avoided.

To date, my hubby still enjoys his “hot tea,” but only at a specific temperature. He unquestionably focuses more on other associated factors that can increase the chance and hence keeps himself fit, avoiding smoking, drinking, and keeping his weight in Control. For me, that’s more assuring than some studies conducted in different parts of the world where the “Tea drinking” habit could be principally different.
